Holidaymakers have been urged to opt for prepaid cards when travelling in the eurozone.

Currency specialist Caxton FX issued the advice, explaining that using a prepaid card can avoid being charged for cash withdrawals from ATMs.

According to its research, spending £90 on a credit card can lead to as much as £6 being charged in hidden fees by banks.

Using a prepaid card can also mean avoiding the transaction fee when a card is used for a shop purchase.

Caxton FX was set up in 2002 and is regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

Prepaid cards were recently described as "the most secure form of travel money" by FairFX, another currency specialist.

It also noted that airports do not give good deals for buying euros and US dollars.

As an alternative, it suggested that travellers go online to buy currency.

The firm also suggested taking some loose change with when going overseas.
